Insomnia

Q: I have been having insomnia for about six months. I have tried Suan Zao Ren Tang, but it causes my eyes to feel dry. My work involves using the computer all day, which makes my eyes tired and feel dry. My doctor gave me a prescription for Ambien, which helps me sleep, but it also makes me feel dry in my eyes and mouth. I also don't feel very good in the morning because of side effects of Ambien. I am having worries and anxieties about situations in my life, and then not being able to sleep, I worry about the insomnia now, too. I have tried Kava and Valerian, but they are not very helpful. Can you recommend a tea or herbal product?

A: I am sorry to hear you are having worries and anxieties. It is difficult to get a good night's sleep when this is the problem. Your prescription helps you sleep, but also has side effects. Biochemicals do help bodily functions, but your body is also an energy system and the chemicals can disrupt your balance.
First of all, you might want to deal with the reason for the worries and anxieties. Cognitive, and/or behavior counseling can help you to get in touch with what is bothering your, and help you find some ways to deal with it. Also, you can learn some techniques to help you relax, which will aid sleep. Meditation me be better for you than medication. If you can't find a counselor in your area, online counseling is an option.
Tian Wang Bu Xin Dan is the most recommended and widely used Chinese herbal formula for sleep. It includes herbs that not only induce sleep, but help you relax and give you sense of well being throughout the day. You can start by taking 10-12 pills at bedtime, and if you feel like you need more for dealing with anxiety and worries during the day, you can take 8 pills in the morning also.

I hope you start feeling better soon.

Thank you for your question. I hope you will let me know your progress.
